Be Kind and Rewind

Do you remember the old video stores? When you walked in there would be signs everywhere that said, “Be Kind and Rewind.”

I know this might be an odd relation, but this sign popped up in my head the other day and I started thinking about it in a different way.

To understand where you are in life, sometimes you have to go back to the beginning. Our history has a cyclical pattern. I don’t think we set out to continuously repeat our behaviors, but we find comfort in what we know, and what we’ve done.

Going back to the beginning might open your eyes, but it will never change the past. The story has been told. But when we re-read, see, or hear a story many times we pay more attention to the details. These details are in our character. They are the recipe that make us who we are.

The past should never stop us from growing into the person we were meant to be. Embrace it, learn from it, and go forward with purpose. Who knows where it might lead? At least you’ll be taking steps in the right direction.
